Early in the morning (4:00 am-ish?) a couple weeks ago Cleo started barking wildly like someone was trying to break into the house, paralyzing me with shock. Normally, she doesn’t bark in the middle of the night so if she is, something is happening.
Anyway, she barked about 5-10 barks and then paused. I could hear what sounded like a small dog barking outside in response. Then Cleo replied with another round of barks. This exchange went on for about 5 minutes. The small dog outside circled the house while barking and Cleo followed it from inside, barking back at it. Meanwhile, I’m lying frozen in bed paralyzed with the panic from Cleo’s initial bark.
Once I was able to move, I looked out the window to see if I could see the barking dog in the moonlight. I shivered at the thought of getting dressed for single-digit cold to go outside and rescue the poor pup.
But it was the fox. I’m so glad it was the fox. No braving the cold in the dark trying to lure a freezing, and likely abandoned, dog into the house.
What did I learn? Fox bark like dogs.
