Tom Petty has always been on the periphery of my “must have” music – had to have it but thought I wouldn’t miss it if I didn’t. After reviewing playlists and pre-playlist compilations (mix tapes and cds) I’ve made in the last 20 years, at least one Tom Petty song has been on every single one. In some cases, two or three. I think that bumps him past the periphery.

I’ve had this song in my library since Highway Companion came out, but never really listened to it. For some reason it’s connecting to me right now, which is odd because it’s usually Pink Floyd that fills that spot.
Here you go (2011/07/04: the vid has gone awol! Argghhh….I’m going to leave it here in hopes that dinosaur aol will reactivate it)

Here’s a different one (added 10/3/2017)

Square One Lyrics (Tom Petty – Highway Companion)
Had to find some higher ground
Had some fear to get around
You can’t say what you don’t know
Later on won’t work no more

Last time through I hid my tracks
So well I could not get back
Yeah my way was hard to find
Can’t sell your soul for peace of mind

Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time… to get back here

Try so hard to stand alone
Struggle to see past my nose
Always had more dogs than bones
I could never wear those clothes

It’s a dark victory
You won and you also lost
Told us you were satisfied
But it never came across

Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time… to get back here

Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time… to get back here

Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
and took a long time… to get back here
